Top 5 Easy to Moderate Hiking Trails Near French River & Killarney

Five easy-to-moderate hikes near Hartley Bay Cottages, French River and Killarney — distance, difficulty, and drive times for Recollet Falls, Mashkinonje's trails, Restoule's Fire Tower Trail, and The Crack.

Northern Ontario's defining feature is the way the Canadian Shield meets the water — pink and white quartzite ridges dropping straight into blue lakes, pine and birch forest crowding right up to the rock. Nowhere is that more true than the stretch around Hartley Bay, French River and Killarney, which makes this one of the best hiking hubs in the province for everyone from casual afternoon walkers to hikers chasing a bucket-list summit. This is our quick-reference guide to five of our favourite trails within reach of the cottages — distance, difficulty, highlights, and drive time from Hartley Bay Road for each.

A little trail prep goes a long way out here. Expect exposed pink quartzite, uneven granite and root-covered paths, and the occasional wooden boardwalk over wetland — sturdy, ankle-supporting footwear matters more than it might elsewhere, running shoes aren't enough on most of these. Bring insect repellent and plenty of water, and in bear country it's worth carrying a bear bell or spray and making some noise as you walk, especially through dense forest sections. Most of these trails sit inside Ontario Parks land (French River, Killarney, Restoule), which means a day-use vehicle permit — worth checking ahead of time rather than discovering it at the trailhead.

Closest to the cottages, about 20 minutes south, is Recollet Falls Trail in French River Provincial Park — an easy-to-moderate out-and-back of about 3 km. It starts at the French River Visitor Centre and traces the edge of the French River Gorge, crossing a 512-foot pedestrian suspension bridge on the way to the historic portage route at Recollet Falls itself, a wide, low cascade that's easily one of the most photogenic spots in the area. It's a great fit for families, history-minded guests, or anyone after a casual afternoon walk rather than a full day out.

About 40 minutes east, in Mashkinonje Provincial Park, the Loudon Peatland Trail is a gentle 2.9 km loop combining wide forest paths with extensive wooden boardwalks over protected wetland. The highlight is an elevated viewing tower overlooking beaver ponds and rare wetland vegetation — a good pick for birdwatching, quiet nature walks, or anyone who wants an accessible, easy hike.

Also in Mashkinonje, about 40 minutes east, the Martin Pond and Pebble Beach Loop is a longer, more rugged combined loop of about 7.4 km, crossing granite ridges and mixed forest. It's a step up in difficulty from the Peatland Trail, rated moderate, and rewards the extra effort with coastal views along the West Arm of Lake Nipissing and scenic rocky bluffs — a good choice if you want a quieter backcountry feel away from the busier main routes.

Further afield, about 80 minutes east in Restoule Provincial Park, the Fire Tower Trail is a moderate 4.1 km loop that climbs through maturing pine plantation and mixed upland hardwood up to the Stormy Lake Bluffs. The payoff at the top is a historic 100-foot steel fire tower and dramatic cliffside views over Stormy Lake — this one's especially worth the drive during fall foliage season, and makes a satisfying mid-length hill climb without tipping into full mountaineering territory.

About 55 minutes west, in Killarney Provincial Park, The Crack is the region's iconic bucket-list hike — a moderate-to-challenging 7.6 km round trip that starts as a flat forest track before climbing sharply through massive white quartzite boulders. The reward for squeezing through the fissure that gives the trail its name is a panoramic 360-degree ridge view over Killarney's lakes and the La Cloche Mountains. We've written a full guide to this one separately, since it deserves it — permit requirements, what to pack, and what the scramble actually feels like.

If you're planning a few of these into one trip, shorter hikes like Recollet Falls or the Mashkinonje trails pair nicely with a stop at the French River Trading Post or the Visitor Centre on the same day. In peak summer, an earlier start helps you beat the heat on the more exposed rock sections, especially on The Crack's open ridge. And whichever trail you pick, there's nothing quite like coming back to a private waterfront hot tub or sauna at the cottage to recover — save your favourites, and we'll see you on the trail.
