Killarney Provincial Park
Established 1964
Killarney's most famous feature is the La Cloche range — ridges of brilliant white quartzite, the eroded remains of mountains once taller than the present-day Rockies, and among the oldest rock formations on Earth at roughly 3.5 billion years old. Ice ages scraped the peaks down and left the ridges and lake basins visitors see today. The park was established in 1964 after lobbying from the Group of Seven, several of whom painted here. Archaeologists have found evidence of prehistoric camps along the park's ancient shorelines dating back 9,000 years.
French River Provincial Park
Established 1989
A designated Waterway Class park — the French River itself has been a canoe route for roughly 6,000 years, first for Indigenous travel and trade, then for fur-trade voyageurs moving between Montreal and the interior. In 1986 it became the first river in Canada named to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System, and the park protects a 105-kilometre stretch of interconnected lakes, gorges and rapids running from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay — the largest waterway park draining into the Great Lakes.
Grundy Lake Provincial Park
Established 1959
A classic Canadian Shield landscape of exposed granite, and a dense scatter of small lakes, ponds and bogs left behind by retreating glaciers. At 3,614 hectares, Grundy Lake was set aside in 1959 to protect that glacial terrain and give visitors an accessible slice of Georgian Bay-country wilderness — still known today for warm, shallow swimming lakes rather than the open rock of its larger neighbours.
Mashkinonje Provincial Park
Established 1963
A quieter, non-operating park administered by Killarney, protecting a mix of wetlands, forest and Canadian Shield terrain. Its centrepiece is the Loudon Peatland — a complex of four wetlands home to provincially significant plant species, reachable by a boardwalk trail. First regulated in 1963, the park was substantially expanded in 2000 to its current 2,040 hectares.
Restoule Provincial Park
Established 1963
Long part of the traditional canoe routes of the Dokis Ojibwa, the Restoule valley later saw European settlement in the 1880s, first as farmland and then for logging. French explorer Samuel de Champlain is recorded passing through the wider area in 1615. Today the roughly 2,800-hectare Natural Environment Park is known for its cliffside lookouts and swimming beach on Stormy Lake.
Killbear Provincial Park
Established 1960
Sitting directly on Georgian Bay, Killbear pairs the pink granite and wind-sculpted pines of the Canadian Shield with sandy Great Lakes beaches — a combination rare enough that it's one of the most photographed shorelines in Ontario. The land was logged for roughly 20 years starting in 1900 before the province expropriated it and designated it a park in 1960.
