Frequently Asked Questions
Everything guests ask us most, in one place — booking, rates, pets, what's included, and getting settled in.
Do you rent by the night, or only by the week?
During peak summer months we book by the week so every guest gets a full, unhurried stay. In spring and fall, shorter 2–3 night stays are often available — just ask when you inquire.
What's the deposit, and how do I pay?
A $500 deposit per cottage holds your dates when booking directly with us, with the balance due 30 days before arrival. We accept Interac e-Transfer and card payment (a small processing fee applies to cards).
Are dogs welcome?
Yes — we're a pet-friendly property. A flat $50 fee per stay covers your furry travel companion, however long you're with us.
What's included in my stay, and what should I bring?
Bed linens, kitchen and bathroom essentials, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies are all provided. Bath towels aren't included, so pack your own along with toiletries, groceries, and firewood (available for purchase locally).
Is the drinking water safe to drink from the tap?
Yes — our water runs through multiple filters, including UV purification, and is completely safe straight from the tap.
Is there a BBQ at each cottage?
Yes — every cottage has its own private BBQ for your stay, fuel included, so dinner by the lake is always an option.
Are life jackets, kayaks, and canoes provided?
Yes — we provide life jackets along with shared kayaks and canoes for every guest, so anyone in your group can get out on the water safely, regardless of age or experience.
Does each cottage have its own private hot tub?
Yes — The Aspen, The Birch, and The Cedar each have their own private hot tub on the deck, open 24 hours, so you're never sharing with another cottage.
Are the EV chargers free to use?
Yes — our Level 2 EV chargers are free for guests to use during their stay, no extra fee.
What kind of fish are in the lake?
Badger Lake and the surrounding French River system are home to bass, pike, muskie, walleye, and perch — a solid mix for both dock fishing and a day out on the water.
Are there fishing guides nearby?
Yes — French River Fishing Guides offers guided fishing charters and trips on the French River for guests who want a local expert on the water.
How many guests does each cottage sleep, and can I book more than one?
The Aspen and The Birch each sleep up to 6; The Cedar is our cozy option for smaller groups. Larger families often pair two cottages, or book all three together and save 5%, for reunions and celebrations.
Are there other cottages nearby, and how private is the lake?
Badger Lake is quiet, with only a handful of cottages on the water and little to no boat traffic — a peaceful spot for swimming, paddling, and stargazing at night.
Is this a licensed short-term rental?
Hartley Bay Cottages is listed in the Municipality of Killarney's official Business Directory under Accommodations — Campgrounds & Cottages, confirming we're a recognized local operator.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is 3:00pm and check-out is 10:00am, with self-check-in via electronic locks for a smooth, contactless arrival.
Will someone meet me when I arrive?
Not in person — check-in is fully self-serve. You'll get an electronic door code ahead of your stay, so you can arrive any time after 3:00pm and let yourself in without waiting on anyone.
How good is the internet?
Every cottage has Starlink Wi-Fi with speeds around 130 Mbps, plenty for streaming, video calls, and working remotely from the deck.
