The Municipality of Killarney

The Municipality of Killarney sits at the entrance to Georgian Bay's North Channel, its harbour sheltered by George Island amid white quartzite peaks and pink granite shoreline. It's the oldest community on the north shore, though still home to fewer than 500 year-round residents.

The village grew up around the Georgian Bay fishing and lumber trade, and that maritime character is still visible along the harbour today — working fish tugs, a marina full of sailboats in summer, and views toward the La Cloche Mountains that once drew Franklin Carmichael and other Group of Seven painters to capture the area's white quartzite ridges. A stop at the harbour for fresh fish and chips, a long-standing Killarney tradition, is practically a rite of passage for visitors passing through.

Despite its small size, Killarney offers a full slate of outdoor recreation — kayaking, hiking, and ice fishing among them — plus a municipal airport, working lighthouses, and a heritage walking tour through the town's history.

Come winter, the town's Winter Carnival brings the community out for a weekend of local events.
