What to Pack for a Northern Ontario Cottage Weekend

Hartley Bay Cottages are fully equipped for a comfortable stay, but a little planning makes the difference between a relaxed weekend and an unnecessary drive back into town. Here's what past guests have found worth packing.

Groceries and essentials: our cottages are a scenic but real drive from the nearest full grocery store, so bring everything you'll need for the whole stay, plus a bit extra. Dish towels, bathroom hand towels, garbage bags and recycling bags aren't provided — pack your own.

Weather layers: Northern Ontario can swing from warm afternoons to cool nights even in summer, and conditions change fast near the water. Bring layers, a rain jacket, and closed-toe shoes for trails at Killarney or around the property.

Bug protection: mosquitoes and blackflies are part of cottage country, especially at dusk in late spring and early summer. A good repellent and lightweight long sleeves make evenings on the deck much more enjoyable.

For the water: each cottage includes canoes and kayaks, so bring swimwear, water shoes, and a life jacket if you have kids who'll want their own fit — we can't guarantee sizes for every guest. Sunscreen and a hat matter more on the water than most people expect.

For the fire pit: campfires are permitted in the designated fire pit when there's no fire ban in effect — bring marshmallows, but check current conditions before you count on one.

Finally: our WiFi is good, but cell service can be spotty depending on your carrier — pack a physical map or download offline maps before you arrive, and let this be the weekend you actually disconnect a little.
